Music - Lifting our voices and our spirits

Our chancel choir is led by Dr. F. Anthony Thurman (Doctor of Musical Arts). Tony is assisted by professional soloists who double as section leaders.

The choir leads worship on Sunday mornings, sings at other times during the holiday season, and rehearses at 8:00 PM Wednesday evenings.

Periodically, Mr. Thurman and the soloists give recitals at the church.

We also have a children's choir conducted by
our Youth Choir Director, Peter Fischer.

There are openings in all sections of the Chancel Choir, and we welcome new members who may wish to join us for the 2009 season.  The ability to read music, match pitch, and attend rehearsals are our only requirements.  Choir practice is Wednesday evenings from 8:00-9:30.

A Note from the Music Committee…

We are blessed to continue our work as Session co-chairs of IPC’s Music & Worship Committee and want to thank Sarah Barnard, Craig Degener, David Harkness, Marge Hone, and Tony Thurman for their service on the committee.  As noted in the mission statement of the Irvington Presbyterian Church, “We are called by Jesus Christ to glorify God through word and song. . .” and the work of the Music and Worship Committee is accomplished through our communal worship: in prayer, the sharing of sacraments, and the proclamation of the Word, as well as through songs and music.

Reverend Dr. Susan Andrews, General Presbyter of the Hudson River Presbytery, was our guest preacher on January 8, 2012.  On January 15th we celebrated the twentieth anniversary of Reverend David Harkness’ installation at IPC. The Youth Choir, under the direction of Peter Fischer and accompanied on the piano by Tony Thurman, performed “Let all the World in Every Corner Sing” in commemoration of this event. The worship service was followed by an especially festive coffee hour in celebration of Reverend Harkness’ twentieth anniversary with us.

As we embark on another year, we share our hopes for 2012.  First and foremost, we hope to expand the numbers in the Chancel Choir.  IPC has many talented members and friends, and as a committee we will continue to express our desire for new participants in our music program.  Second, we aspire to host more concerts for the church and community.  We hope to share the abundance of our music program and the blessing of our Klais pipe organ as part of the mission of IPC and as always, we dedicate our work to the glory of God.

If you have any questions about joining the Chancel Choir and/or any suggestions or comments regarding the Music and Worship program, please feel free to contact any committee member or either one of us. Mary Bongiovi (meb9@columbia.edu; 478-0309) and Ed Hahm (ehahm@aol.com; 591-7380)
